Abstract/Contents:"The National Tall Fescue High and Low Maintenance test was seeded during Sep 83. Because of winterkill the test was reseeded in May 84. The test is located at the University of Nebraska Agricultural Research and Development Center, John Seaton Anderson Turfgrass Research Facility, Mead, NE. Both the high and low maintenance tests were fertilized with 4 lb N/1000 sp ft through the growing season consisting of 1 lb applications in Apr, Jun, Sep, and Nov. A preemergence application of pendamethyline was applied in June at 1.5 lb product/acre. The tests were irrigated as needed to avoid moisture stress. The high maintenance test was mowed twice a wk at 1 in and the low maintenance once a wk at 2.5 in. Rainfall from Apr-Sep was near normal, and temperatures above normal from Apr-Jul and slightly below normal in Aug and Sep. Inoculum of R. solani was from natural sources. Rhizoctonia blight severity was moderate on the low maintenance (2.5 in ht) and severe on the high maintenance (1 in cut). A range of disease severity was prsent among cultivars with the range being more evident on the high maintenance than on the low maintenance. The cultivars or lines 'Mer.FA 83-1', 'Barcel', 'Olympic', 'SYN-GA1', 'Falcon', 'Finelawn I', Unknown, '5GL', 'Tempo', 'KY-31', 'Houndog', and 'TF 813' showed low to moderate severities under both maintenance systems. 'Maverick', 'Adventure', 'Kenhy', 'Jabuar', and 'KS-78-4' had low severities under low maintenance but moderately high to high severities under high maintenance. Thus, the level of maintenance appears to influence severity of Rhizoctonia blight on certain cultivars."
