Facility Names: | Lightning Bug Golf Course, in Triune, Tennessee |
Subjects' Names: | Blackburn, Bill |
Abstract/Contents: | Profiles Lightning Bug Golf Course in Triune, Tennessee, and course owner Bill Blackburn. States that "career-wise, Blackburn, 48, is the General Manager for Tennessee Business for Smith Turf & Irrigation." Details the construction of the course, stating that "Blackburn designed the course. He, [his wife] Jessica and some friends built it with their own sweat and materials purchased out of their own pocket or donated by a variety of friends and companies. [Blackburn's daughter] Ann Catherine came up with the name." Explains that "the course is open to the public, of sorts. Located 600 yards off the road without a sign, it is frequented by friends of the Blackburns, friends of their friends, and a lot of kids. There is no charge to play. USGA [United States Golf Association] rules apply, with the additional request to repair ball marks, rake bunkers, and seek shelter at the first sign of lightning or a storm." Describes maintenance practices used at the course, stating that "greens are mowed six days a week, fairways and roughs at least twice - mostly by Bill and Jessica themselves (with some occasional help), either before or after their real jobs." States that "well before 'growing the game' became an industry-wide concern, the idea for a local 'fun' short course came to Blackburn as a logical successor to the 1000 sq. ft. [square foot] putting/chipping green and half-acre fishing pond he had built for his family in 2002...Construction started in the fall of 2003 with planting of the fescue roughs, followed the next spring by non-selective treatment of the area that would be fairways and greens." |
