Abstract/Contents: | Red thread, caused by the fungus Laetisaria fuciformis, often attacks perennial ryegrass leaving brown patches, from a few inches to a foot or more in diameter, in turf with a minimal fertility regime. 48 perennial ryegrass cultivars were evaluated for natural resistance to Red thread on replicated (3 times) and randomized 4 x 6 foot plots. Non-irrigated turf, mowed at 1.0 inch height, received 3 lbs of N/1000 ft2 in the fall with no fungicides applied at all. Percentage red thread diseased plants were evaluated June 26 after a warm and moist period of several weeks. The greatest disease resistance to Red thread was observed in the cultivars 'All star', 'Regal' and 'IA 728'. |
