Abstract/Contents:Discusses a study examining a biological treatment for reclaimning and improving water in an ornamental lake. States that "the target of the treatment are: reducing eutrophication process; reducing pathogenic bacterial change; increasing transparency, obtain quality parameters of water safe for bathing according to Italian law." Details methods and materials used in the study, stating that "the treatments began on June 20, 2006 and the applications were carried on, on a monthly basis, until May 2007....The water has been treated every month with application of a biological promoter based on useful selected microorganisms (mainly Bacillus spp.) and a pool of enzymes (lipase, protease, cellulase, beta-glucanase, pectynase, nutrients and supports) at the rate of 1 g [gram] per cubic meter of water...The Secchi disk method was used to determine transparency." Reports that "low transparency is not due to the presence of inorganic suspended material." Concludes that "the reclamation action of EUR lake (Rome) reached the targets expected: the concentration of pathogenic bacteria (total and faecal coliforms) and the oxygen saturation were reduced; transparency of water improved. Even if this is not a lake used for bathing, also the limits for bathing water imposed by Italian Law (law decree 3 April 2006 n. 152 GU n. 88 of 14 April 2006) were reached. The balance of the habitat was not affected and neither were the usual suport and recreational activities."
