Abstract/Contents:Presents a study conducted "to study the effect of using acids to reduce the pH value of a golf green rootzone and to determine any potential benefits to the turfgrass sward." Details methods and materials used in the study, stating that "in July 2005, an experiment applying two different acids (Nitric and Phosphoric) to treatment plots measuring 0.25 m-2 [square meters] in size on a USGA [United States Golf Association] specification green was initiated...Each acid was separately mixed with mains water to give 41 solutions with pH values of 5.8 and 4.0 for both acids." Reports that "the application of nitric and phosphoric acid at a pH value of 4.0 positively impacted tissue iron concentration and grass colour [color]. Rootzone pH was significantly reduced on three measurement dates when acid treatments with a pH of 4.0 were used." Concludes that "acid application to turfgrass swards on high pH rootzones may enhance tissue iron uptake without adversely reducing sward quality. Great care is required to prevent grass plant shock which would reduce its stress tolerance and increase its susceptibility to wear, disease infection and weed infestation. The effects of acid application were temporary."
