Abstract/Contents:Presents a study conducted to investigate "the effect of clipping management in combination with irrigation level on shoot density and thatch depth." Details methods and materials used in the study, stating that "this study was carried out at the Tuscia University in Viterbo, Italy...from May 2000 to September 2002, in a sandy loam textured soil, with pH of 7.0 and 1.4% organic matter. The regional climate is sub-mediterranean...The main factor was irrigation level while secondary factor was clipping management. The turfgrass was Festuca arundinacea Schreb. 'Safari'. Irrigation levels were 100%, 75%, 50%, 25% of maxiumum evapotranspiration (ETm)." Reports that "thatch depth was not affected by clipping management in 2001 and 2002...Furthermore thatch was neither influenced by irrigation level nor by interaction between clipping management and irrigation during the same years." Concludes that "thatch depth was not affected by clipping management and irrigation level nor by their interaction whereas shoot density was influenced by irrigation level. Returning clippings to the turf is an advisable practice with any irrigation regime adopted."
