Abstract/Contents:Presents a study conducted to "determine the relationship between the nitrogen content of creeping bentgrass puting green and its spectral characteristics in order to evaluate the possibility of using remote sensing as diagnostic tool of nitrogen nutritional status." Details methods and materials used in the study, stating that "the trial was carried out...on a green of Agrostis stolonifera L., cv Pencross. During the trial period a turf height of 4.0 mm [millimeters] was maintained and irrigation was applied to prevent drought stress. In order to maximize the variability of nitrogen available to the turf the following 9 rates of nitrogen, from ammonium sulphate, were applied: 0, 25, 46, 93, 139, 185, 231, 281 and 306 kg [kilograms] ha-1 [per hectare]." Reports that "spectral characteristics of creeping bentgrass putting green were modified by the amount of N [nitrogen] fertilizer distributed. An increase in N fertilization rates resulted in a decrease of values of reflectance in the PAR region and an increase in the infrared region." Concludes that "the nitrogen nutritional status of an Agrostis stolonifera putting green was highly correlated to variations detected by leaf spectral reflectance. However, low mowing height and subsequent interference by soil on reflected light can limit application of this diagnostic tool."
