| Abstract/Contents: | Controlling crabgrass with organic arsenicals such as DSMA and MSMA typically requires two or more applications, with an expected period of turf discoloration, and a potential for serious kill of some cool season grasses. Acclaim (Fenoxaprop-ethyl) was released in 1986 for postemergence crabgrass control in turf. The purpose of the test conducted in 1987 on crabgrass postemergence control was to evaluate rates, chemical combinations and formulation on the efficacy of Acclaim and other herbicides. An established Kentucky bluegrass turf was irrigated with approximately 1.0 inch of water prior to chemical applications to provide good soil moisture. Twenty-four treatments in three replications were applied on July 9 when the crabgrass was at a 2 to 4 leaf stage. Repeat applications were sprayed July 23. The plots were maintained at 1.5 inches throughout the study and additional irrigation was provided as necessary to prevent dormancy. Crabgrass color is visually rated on 3 dates (July 10, 16, 31) and percent control on Aug. 25 is presented. Percent dallisgrass control and discolorization of dallisgrass and Kentucky bluegrass are visually rated (1-9 scale) as well. A straight application of Acclaim 1 EC at 0.18 lb ai/A was rated to be most effective for postemergent crabgrass control. Dallisgrass populations increase with the use of some herbicides to control crabgrass. |
