Abstract/Contents:Results of spot spraying Kentucky bluegrass to control tall fescue infestatons using 3 different herbicides in Kentucky. The treatments were Daconate 6 at 2.4, 4.8, and 7.2 lb ai/A (.25%, .5%, and .75% solution); Telar at 2.4, 4.75, and 7.06 lb ai/A (.25%, .5%, and .75% solution); Pursuit at .95, and 2.4 lb ai/A (.1% and .25% solution). Healthy tall fescue plants were marked throughout the turf, and four replications of each treatment were sprayed on July 31. The spots were sprayed with a hand-trigger spray bottle that delivered 1 ml per squirt and was adjusted to cover about 1 sq. ft. with a coarse mist. Each spot received 10 ml of solution. The spots were neither irrigated nor mowed, and were observed for two months. After two months the tall fescue was much healthier than the Kentucky bluegrass due to severe drought conditions. All Daconate treatments severely burned both tall fescue and bluegrass turf. After two months the tall fescue recovered while the Kentucky bluegrass died. Both the Pursuit and Telar treatments burned the tall fescue within two weeks but after two months both treatments killed the Kentucky bluegrass. Some tall fescue survived in the Telar treated plot though. All the rates used seemed too high. The bluegrass death could have been related to water stresss that was aggravated by the herbicides.
