Abstract/Contents:Discusses the potential impact of climate changes on golf course irrigation in Europe. Explains that "in many parts of Europe water resources are under increasing levels of stress...droughts, rising competition for water between different sectors...and demands for greater environmental protection have all highlighted the limitations on available water supplies." Suggests that "climate change will directly impact on water use by affecting plant (turf) physiology, soil water balances, the areas irrigated, the methods used and the volumes of water demanded (and abstracted, if available) for irrigation." Mentions possible indirect impacts, including agronomic turf management and changes in design requirements for drainage and irrigation on golf courses. Details potential responses to climate change, stating that "short-term plans include better irrigation equipment and scheduling to increase irrigation application uniformity and efficiency, using weather forecasting to avoid rainfall losses, encouraging deeper rooting of grass species and specifying more moisture retentive growing media for green construction."
