Abstract/Contents:Presents an analysis of "free sugars (glucose, fructose and sucrose) and fructans in tall fescue organs (leaf blade, shoot and root) from adult plants fed with different nitrogen concentration." Details methods and materials used in the study, stating that "a tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb. cv 'Safari') turf was established in October 2003 by seeds (60 g [grams] m-2 [per square meter]) in the faculty fields (Pisa, Italy). Nitrogen was applied in October 2004 at the rates of 0, 100 and 500 kg [kilograms] ha-1 [hectare] (ammonium sulfate)." Reports that "nitrogen supply do [does] not show any effects on glucose level in any organs at any experimental times and similar results are showed [shown] also for fructose content. Sucrose concentration appears partially similar even if with some fluctuations (especially in shoot), but not related with nitrogen treatment." Concludes that "nitrogen shows effects on fructan accumulation in tall fescue plants, but reduction of fructan in leaf blade and, in the long term, in the shoot, can pose a problem in case of close mowing height or other abiotic stresses."
