| Abstract/Contents: | Profiles hybrid sports pitches, stating that "hybrid systems have been available...with a synthetic pile woven into the soil amid natural turf...or with the synthetic pile inserted into a loose backing...and sunk into natural turf." Presents a study conducted to evaluate "the playing characteristics of a pilot hybrid system pitch for football and rugby." Details methods and materials used in the study. Presents results related to ball rebound resilience, ball roll, traction, surface hardness, and evenness. Reports that "despite the intense usage level experienced by the pitch (8 h [hours] week-1 [per week] for two months), natural turfgrass cover was 100% on all test areas." Concludes that "almost all playing characteristics fell within accepted ranges for natural or artificial pitches. Small excesses in ball rebound and traction values could be addressed by tweaking grass mowing height or infill layer depth." |
