Abstract/Contents:Presents a study conducted to "study the effect of simulated soccer traffic on the root system of two turf mixtures seeded on a silt-loam soil amended with sand." Details methods and materials used in the study, stating that "a field trial was established on 7 March 2000 at the experimental farm of Padova University [Italy], and was conducted for four years. Two mixtures and two levels of simulated soccer traffic (with and without) were compared in a split-plot design with three replicates with mixture as main plots and traffic treatment as subplots." Reports that "at the thatch layer and at the upper soil level simulated traffic caused a severe reduction of RLD [root length density]...and RWD [root weight density]." Concludes that "root density was markedly reduced by soccer traffic, but the same effect was limited to the thatch layer and the upper soil level. The response to treatment was the same for the two mixtures. The root system of Lolium perenne + Poa pratensis mixtures different from that of Festuca arundinacea + Poa pratensis in higher density and average diameter in the upper level of soil profile (0-3 cm [centimeters]) and thatch layer."
