| Abstract/Contents: | Reports effects of 2,4-D and Acclaim when applied to seedlings: Tall fescue (Jaguar), Kentucky bluegrass (Adelphi) and perennial ryegrass (All Star) under greenhouse conditions. Treatments were applied at three different times (September 17, 29, and October 14) after the emergence of the fescue (Sept. 17), the bluegrass (Sept. 10), and the rygrass (Sept. 13). The treatments were 2,4-D at 1 lb ai/A and Acclaim at .15 lb ai/A. Moisture and temperature remained constant and grasses were fed twice in October with a 20-20-20 soluble plant food. Grasses were kept mowed at 1.5 inches after Sept. 20. The first application (Sept. 17) caused severe epinasty to all 3 grasses treated with 2,4-D. The fescue and ryegrass recovered within 10 days but the bluegrass took two weeks and population was halved. Reaction to Acclaim was similar. The second application (Sept. 29) did not injure fescue or ryegrass but temporarily twisted the bluegrass (with 2,4-D). Ryegrass and fescue recovered quickly from bleaching with Acclaim but bluegrass burned severely through October. Acclaim also showed growth regulator effects. The third application (Oct. 14) caused no injury from 2,4-D and minor burning of ryegrass and fescue leaves with a moderate burn (lasting 2 weeks) to bluegrass. |
