Abstract/Contents:Details the development of soil surfactants. Reports that "research has indicated that the use of surfactants is a practical and effective strategy for addressing water repellency in various growing systems. Surfactants were first used to improve water penetration into soils in the 1950's." States that "the original soil wetting agent (AquaGro) was a blend of non-ionic surfactants including alkylphenol ethoxylate (APE) and a fatty acid polyglycol...For plant and environmental safety reasons as well as the desire for efficacy, alternative surfactant technologies were being investigated in the early 1990s....Since 2000, there have been additional novel developments in surfactant technology including patent worthy technological developments. Significant enhancements in uniform wetting of the soil and rootzone has been achieved with some of these formulations, giving turf managers that much more control over providing desirable growing conditions despite natural tendencies of soils toward water repellency."
