| Abstract/Contents: | Reports results of use of John Deere Power-Till machine to harvest bermudagrass sprigs compared to sod shredding which can only be performed annually to harvest sprigs. Power-Till saw blades were set 20 cm apart and plots were harvested weekly, bi-weekly, tri-weekly, and every fourth week with the machine. Total yield (KgOM/ha), per harvest yield (KbOM/ha), total sprigs (sprigs/sq.M), per harvest sprigs (sprigs/sq.m), sprig length (mm), sprig weight (mg OM), sprig density (mg OM/mm), and soil content percentage measurements were taken. A shredded sod plot was used as the control. Weather conditions may have affected sprig harvest yields but to what extent is unknown. Even though the results from this research show that the Power-Till harvesting method did not give comparable yields to that of shredded sod, this technique is still in the developmental stages and with modification may still prove to be more economically feasible than shredded sod, especially in areas with a longer establishment season. Includes a literature review regarding bermudagrass sprig harvesting. |
