| Abstract/Contents: | Presents a study conducted to "evaluate the influence of varying mowing height regimes on Poa pratensis and Lolium perenne competition during the initial development of the lawn." Details methods and materials used in the study, stating that "a pot experiment with four replications (split plot experimental design, pot demensions 400 x 300 x 70 mm [millimeters]) was established in 200 in [a] greenhouse." Reports that "the results proved that both the management variables (sowing rate of L. perenne and mowing height) influenced the initial development of the sward. The average number of L. perenne plants increased significantly with the increase of sowing rate and its proportion in the seed mixture." Concludes that "the results showed the competitive interactions of the two most important amenity grasses during the first stages of sward establishment. It is clear that the recommended sowing rates (250-300 kg [kilograms] ha-1 [per hectare]) are very high and cause strong intra and inter-species competition in swards." |
