| Abstract/Contents: | Presents a study conducted to "identify the causal agent of a root disease observed on Agrostis stolonifera in two contrasting locations in Northern and Southern Italy." Details methods and materials used in the study, stating that "in the fall of 2004 and 2007, regular patches ranging from 5 to 70 cm [centimeters] in diameter were observed in two Agrostis stolonifera putting greens, located respectively in Northern...and Southern Italy." Reports that "grass in the affected areas was initially wilted and reddish, and later exhibited a straw colour [color]. On specimen roots, as well as on most of the inoculuated plants, ectotrophic root infecting hyphae, discolorations and brown steles were evident...Pathogenicity tests performed with Albisola strains showed that most of the isolates were highly virulent, strongly reducing root depth." Concludes that "following observation of symptoms and signs, culture characteristics and pathogenicity test results, the disease was recognized as take-all patch likely caused by G. graminis var. avenae." |
