Abstract/Contents:Discusses the use of sand in golf green construction and as a potential topdressing material, highlighting the use of sand at Glencoe Golf Club. Explains that "due to a rather drawn out greens rebuilding program that began in 1963 and the use of several differnt soil mixes, [the course] ended up with greens that are all very different from each other...This lack of uniformity also hampered...maintenance operations because each green required too much specialized attention. Each one required different amounts of water, ferilitzer, fungicide and aeration...Since [the course] could not afford to rebuild all of [its] greens, [the maintenance crew] decided to try the sand topdressing method of greens management." Mentions a greens rebuilding program that used sand mixes. Reports that the turf "grew better than [expected]. It grew rapidly, put down very depp [deep] roots, became tight and dense and maintained excellent color. The green accepted water unbelievable [unbelievably] well, yet maintained excellent moisture relations."
