Abstract/Contents:Field and greenhouse experiments in Minnesota in 1967-69 showed Capsus simulans (Stal) to be the most important cause of silvertop of bluegrass (Poa pratensis) in the State. The numbers of bugs per 100 sweeps of an insect net were correlated closely with the incidence of silvertop. Small numbers of bugs were capable of causing extensive injury in bluegrass seed fields, and a single insect could cause silvertop in a feeding period of only 10 min. The bugs were most prevalent in older stands of bluegrass and in fields that followed spring wheat in rotation. Infestations originated from overwintering eggs in the straw and stubble of both bluegrass and spring wheat. Silvertop can be prevented by burning the fields after harvest to destroy the overwintering eggs or by controlling the bugs with an insecticide, such as malathion, during the early heading stage of bluegrass.
