Abstract/Contents:A detailed study of the seasonal cycle of Sphenophorus venatus confluens Chitt., which had recently been reported as a new pest of orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata) grown for seed in Oregon, was conducted in 1967-68. Overwintered adults of this weevil became active and began to feed in March. Mating and oviposition occurred throughout May, and by mid-June large numbers of eggs had been deposited in the stems and on the leaf sheaths of orchardgrass. The larvae fed in the stems (or occasionally for a time on the leaves) and bored down to the roots, where the larval stage was completed. Pupation occurred in the crowns of the grass, and most of the adults had emerged by October. Feeding damage by early-instar larvae had little or no effect on the current year's seed crop, since the grass was near maturity by July. However, larval feeding on the roots during July and August reduced yields in the following year. Currently, S. v. confluens is of importance only on orchardgrass, although bentgrass (Agrostis) and bluegrass (Poa) are satisfactory as food-plants.
