Abstract/Contents:Discusses potential biological control methods of turfgrass diseases. Highlights the use of the bacterial agent Stenotrophomonas maltophilia C3, suggesting that "strain C3 produces enzymes that digest various structural components of fungi." Presents a study conducted on "the effectiveness of C3 in inhibiting plant infection by fungi...compared with that of mutant strains lacking the ability to produce chitinase." Explains potential advantages and disadvantages of biocontrol, stating that "one advantage is that defense responses can be induced throughout the plant or at some distance from the inducing agent, and thus uniform coverage of all susceptible leaf surfaces by the biocontrol agent is not required...A disadvantage...is that the amount of resistance that can be triggered by an inducing agent is dependent upon the level of 'extra' resistance that a plant can potentially express." Concludes that "microbial traits found important in biocontrol can be added to the selection criteria used in the screening for...more effective agents."
