| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the role of handwatering in turfgrass maintenance, focusing on the experience of course superintendent Rober Cowan. Explains that "technology has put an end to manually watering courses 10 to 12 hours a day, seven days a week. But for Cowan...a typical summer day can include up to eight hours of hand-watering." Explains that "balancing the turf's survival needs with golfer perception is a constant struggle." Details the development of efficient irrigation systems, stating that "true head-to-head coverage, multiple programs to manage water flow, individual head control and water flow measured by the minute...are just a few of the technological advancements changing the picture of golf course irrigation." Suggests that "though it can help in a pinch, hand-watering is ultimately just a temporary fix for larger irrigation system issues." Concludes that "by exploring irrigation technology options, [superintendents] can decide whether letting a part or system go for 'one more season' is worth the cost of hand-watering." |
