Abstract/Contents:Discusses bunker construction. Explains that "putting surfaces shrink over time, fairway lines change, trees grow to impede play and hamper maintenance and, of course, the appearance and playing characteristics of bunkers are compromised." Suggests that "a number of factors conspire against bunkers. Mechanical raking alters margins and the bunker's original character; edging and turf encroachment do the same." Offers suggestions for renovating bunkers, stating that "renovation projects should include a comprehensive examination of bunker schemes throughout the entire course, preferably by a golf architect." Concludes that "first and foremost, bunker renovation projects must aim to improve the functionality of bunkers. However, when and where appropriate, such projects should also aim to inject some strong character and added interest into a course through comprehensive examination of bunker locations and style, preferably by a golf architect. Through some thoughtful design and creative shaping, every course has the opportunity to possess an attractive, thought-provoking collection of functional sand hazards if a bunker renovation project is approached and planned properly."
