Abstract/Contents:Discusses possible issues between golf courses and green environmentalists in Europe, stating that "the Scottish government will...decide on which of the competing interests - environment or economic - will prevail or more likely broker a compromise between commercialism and conservation later [in 2008]." Suggests that "some critics have...referred to golf courses as 'green deserts,' devoid of meaningful habitat and an absence of a genuine richness and diversity of wildlife. In the green corner, supporters of golf's eco-credentials - including many environmentalists - recognise [recognize] the social, sporting, economic and environmental value of the game, advocating that golf courses provide permanent green space, protection from more invasive forms of development and offer invaluable refuge for endangered species." Mentions that "one thing the parties do agree on, almost unanimously, is that never before has there been more attention focused on the environmental impact of golf, and that the Royal & Ancient game has never had a greater opportunity to address and be seen to engage in the environmental arena." Profiles the Golf Environment Europe (GEE), "a pan-European initiative, promoting environmental sustainability in golf." Suggests that "[GEE's] neutral position and participation from golfing and environmental organisations [organizations] make an ideal pan-European platform to support and report on golf's environmental activities."
