Abstract/Contents:Profiles the Castle Course at St. Andrews in Scotland. States that to qualify as a true links course, "the fairways and greens have to be forever firm so the low, running shot - the best option to counter a heavy wind - can be used as it would on any of the classic links designs." Details the construction of the Castle Course, stating that it "might be slow, but it's meticulous." Explains that "to achieve [firm and fast conditions tee to green] on such heavy soil, the sand layer of the United States Golf Association-type greens was extended well out into the approach at a depth of 6 inches so shots could bounce on." States that "a complex mix of grass types were used at the Castle Course...Traditional fertilizers were used for the grow-in, including an 8-0-16 mix to hold off the meadow grass." Mentions that "sand capping was used on the parts of the site where inferior soils, such as silts predominated. This evened up the consistency and uniformity across the growing medium from both a hydrological and agronomic standpoint."
