Abstract/Contents: | "Postemergent control of smooth crabgrass [Digitaria ischaemum (Schreb.) Muhl.] with fenoxaprop alone and when tank-mixed with selected herbicides, insecticides and fungicides was evaluated in four field trials at The University of Rhode Island Turf Research Farm, Kingston, R.I. Treatments were applied to lawn areas of red fescue (Festuca rubra L.), a mixture of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), and a mixture of perennial ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass and red fescue. A fourth area was fallow. The red fescue lawn and the fallow area contained large crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop.] in addition to the smooth crabgrass. The ryegrass-bluegrass-fescue area was treated in early June when crabgrass was in the 1-4 leaf stage and germination was still occurring. The ryegrass-bluegrass area was treated in late June when most crabgrass had germinated and was in the 1-5 leaf stage. The fallow and red fescue areas and several treatments in the ryegrass-bluegrasss lawn were treated after crabgrass had tillered. Herbicides, rates and dates of treatment are shown in Table 1. Plot size was 4 by 4 feet with three replications. Herbicides were applied as sprays at 60 gpa in the ryegrass-bluegrass-fescue lawn, and 50 gpa in other tests. Lawn areas were irrigated as needed to prevent drought stress. Crabgrass control was evaluated between August 18 and August 24, 1987. Fenoxaprop alone provided excellent (90-100%) crabgrass control at the .12 lb and .18 lb rates in all but the early postemergent (June 3) trial where germanation continued following treatment. Combinations of DCPA, pendimethalin or prodiamine with fenoxaprop at the .12 lb rate resulted in nearly complete control in the early post treatments, as did the MSMA plus DSMA combination. Combinations of fenoxaprop at .18 lb with broadleaf herbicides provided excellent crabgrass control when applied to crabgrass in the 1-5 leaf stage. When applied to tillered crabgrass in the fallow area on the same date however, mixtures of fenoxaprop with 2,4-D + mecprop + dicamba, 2,4-D + triclopyr, 2,4-D + diclorprop, and bromoxynil resulted in poor control. Efficacy of fenoxprop was not diminished whem combined with triclopyr alone or with chlorflurenol. Fenoxaprop at .12 lb combined with dicamba at .12 provided good control (82%) of tillered crabgrass in the red fescue lawn where the same rate of fenoxaprop combined with 2,4-D + mecprop + dicamba resulted in only 17% control. Combinations of fenoxaprop at .12 and .18 lb with fluroxypyr resulted in excellent crabgrass control in the 1-5 leaf and tiller stages. Control with fenoxaprop alone at .08 lb was increased from 66% to 81% by the addition of fluroxypyr at .5 lb in the red fescue lawn. Efficacy of fenoxaprop was not affected by combination of fenoxaprop at .18 lb with chlorpyrifoa, iprodione or chlorthalonil. No objectionable turf injury was observed." |
