Abstract/Contents:"The herbicides evaluated were applied to perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) stands in 50 gpa, and test areas were irrigated within 24 hours of application. All studies were arranged in a randomized complete block with four replications. Percent of plot area covered by smooth crabgrass [Digitaria ischaemum (Schreb.) Muhl.] was determined visually in September. Unless otherwise specified, dates and rates of application are noted in Tables 1 and 2. The herbicides listed in Table 1 were applied to a dense stand of perennial ryegrass and only prodiamine 65wdg (0.75 lb/A) provided excellent (>90%) control of smooth crabgrass. Other prodiamine rates and formulations as well as pendimethalin, DCPA, EL 107 plus either benefin of benefin/trifluralin, and benefin/trifluralin provided fair (67 to 78%) to good (80 to 89%) smooth crabgrass control. Poor control (9 to 31%) was provided by quinclorac and EL 107. Unlike the a forementioned study, herbicides listed in Table 2 were applied to an open ryegrass stand. Acceptable control in this siuation was only provided by sequential applications (1.5 + 1.5 lb/A) of flumetralin 1.2E and pendimethalin 60DG. A single application of pendimethalin 60DG (1.5 lb/A) provided fair (78%) control; however, all other herbicide treatments were ineffective. Diphenamid, and especially AC 222, were extremely phytotoxic (Table 2). All turf in AC 222 treated plots eventually died. A third, preemergence herbicide evaluation was conducted on an open stand of perennial ryegrass in 1987 for which no data are shown. In that study, excellent smooth crabgrass control was provided by pendimethalin 60DG at 1.5 or 3.0 lb/A. Two formulations of prodiamine (65DG and 46G + fertilizer) provided good control (84 to 89%) whereas, prodiamine 29G + fertilizer provided poor control (33 to 43%). In a fourth study (data not shown) fenoxaprop (0.18 lb/A) mixed with DCPA (7.5 or 10.5 lb/A), and applied 24 May 1987 to smooth crabgrass seedlings in the 2 to 3 leaf stage, provided 86 to 90% control. Fenoxaprop (0.12 lb/A) tank mixed with either pendimethalin (1.5 lb/A) or prodiamine (0.5 lb/A) provided 92 to 89% control, respectively. MSMA (2.0 lb/A) tank mixed with DCPA (7.5 or 10.5 lb/A) gave 53 to 76% control, respectively. MSMA (1.5 lb/A) applied as a mix with DCPA (7.5 lb/A), and followed by another MSMA (1.5 lb/A) application in 12 days provided 82% control. MSMA treatments yellowed the perennial ryegrass but caused no significant injury to the turf."
