Abstract/Contents: | "The ChemLawn Spray Gun equipped with the 4 GPM nozzle is designed to apply dilute mixtures of fertilizers and pesticides to lawns at a spray volume of 1627 L ha-1 (174gpa). The recommended nozzle flow rate for this application is 15.1 L min-1 (4gpm) at 17 kPa (2.5 psi) nozzle pressue. The 4 GPM nozzle is an injection molded, nylon nozzle containing 48 straight spray jets measuring 1.27 mm in diameter that are arranged on a convex, spherical spray plate. It generates a solid cone spray pattern. The objective of this study was to measure the droplet spectra of the 4 GPM nozzle operating at flow rates between 14.8 and 18.9 L min-1 to study the effect of changes in flow rate on droplet size distribution and to compare the nozzle to a low pressure flat fan nozzle (BJ 0480) operating at 1.3 L min-1 (0.35 gpm) flow rate. Spectral analysis was performed with a Bete Droplet Analyzer. This analyzer uses a spatial, direct measurement of droplets via a high speed, video imaging system that is capable of measuring droplets between 2 and 10,000 micrometer in diameter. Nozzles were positioned 46 cm above the sampling port of the analyzer and droplet spectra was determined at four seperate sampling areas in the spray stream. The 4 GPM nozzle has a VMD of 2128 micrometers with less than 0.5% of the spray volume composed of spray droplets less than 250 micrometers in diameter. Droplets as small as 22 and as large as 3559 micrometers were measures in these studies. Increasing the flow rate from 15.1 to 18.9 L min-1 did not significantly increase the percent of total spray volume generated as fine droplets nor reduce the VMD and relative span characteristics of the droplelt spectra (Table 1). Droplets formed at the perimeter of the spray spream are larger than those formed in the center of the stream. All droplets emitted from the BJ0480 nozzle were smaller than 250 micrometers. Droplets as small as 5 and as large as 243 micrometers were detected for the BJ0480 nozzle (Table 2). Review of published studies on droplet spectra and spray drift suggeat drift problems are associated with droplets smaller than 200 micrometers. The droplet spectra of the 4 GPM nozzle operating at recommended flow rates generates a very low percentage of its total spray volume as droplets in this size class. Because of this, the larger droplets produced by the 4 GPM nozzle are less likely to drift then the smaller droplets generated by low pressure flat fan nozzles. Consequently, the ChemLawn Spray Gun and 4 GPM nozzle can be used on days when wind speeds would otherwise prevent the use of conventional, low volume spray equipment to apply herbicides. Field drift measurement studies are required, however, to substantiate this assumption" |
