Abstract/Contents:"The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of pendimethalin application on the growth and quality of five commonly used Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) cultivars. Pendimethalin (60% WDG) was applied to 0.91 x 1.82 m plots of 'A-34, Adelphi, Baron, Merion, and Touchdown' Kentucky bluegrass on May 3, 1986. Rates of 1.7 or 3.4 kg ai/ha were applied using a CO2 powered sprayer at 207 kPa pressure delivering 1390 L/ha. On May 6, 1986, 5 cm diameter x 2.5 cm deep plugs were removed from all cultivar/rate combinations and were transplanted into a sandy rooting media in the field to observe root and rhizome development (evaluated on 6/2, 7/3, 9/11, and 11/28, 1986). On April 16, 1987, pedimethalin was reapplied to a remaining set of Kentucky bluegrass plugs to determine the effect of successive annual application on root and rhizome development (evaluated on 4/15, 5/26, and 8/4, 1987). Turfgrass quality and crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop.] control were evaluated when appropriate during both 1986 and 1987. Pendimethalin applied at either 1.7 or 3.4 kg ai/ha provided excellent season long crabgrass control during both years. Turfgrass quality (1=brown, low quality; 9=dark green, high quality) was not affected by pendimethalin applied at either rate. No discoloration was noted following application in either year. Quality (mean of all cultivars) for plots treated at 0, 1.7, and 3.4 kg ai/ha averaged 7.5, 7.3, and 7.6, respectively, during the four weeks following application. Following 1986 application, the 3.4 kg ai/ha rate of pendimethalin significantly reduced root regrowth (P=.01) when determined 30 days after transplanting (6/2). Root mass (mean of all cultivars) averaged 0.43, 0.34, and 0.26 g/plug in response to the 0, 1.7, and 3.4 rates of pendimethalin. Root length (mean of all cultivars) averaged 4.4, 3.6, and 3.0 cm/plug in response to the 0, 1.7, and 3.4 kg application rates, respectively. These reductions were short lived, however, with no further differences in root mass or root length observed during 1986 or 1987. Total rhizome mass and number of rhizomes produced did not vary in response to pendimethalin application at any time during the study. This encouraging since preemergent materials are often applied to low quality turf areas exhibiting poor density where it is desirable for the existing turfgrass to spread and colonize bare areas."
