Abstract/Contents:Proffiles the Lake Wales Country Club. Reports that in 1983 a new club house was built. States that "a series of course projects began in 1985 to improve the greens, tees, bunkers, and practice areas." States that "the Lake Wales layout is a little bit more wide open than it used to be thanks (or no thanks) to Huricanes Charley, Frances and Jeanne in 2004...they lost around 500 trees overall." Discusses two possible, issues with courses, water removal and retention. Reports that "[they] can get a 3-inch rain and be ready for play in 30 minutes or less." Discusses water retention stating that "the ponds on the course are lined in order to retain water and irrigation must be managed to insure proper moisture levels are maintained on the course. The course relies on a deep well for irrigation water." States that "a sandy, well-drained soil profile also means a potential for nematodes and mole crickets. Superintendent Jim Rowland applies Curfew on 10 to 15 acres easch year including the greens and the tees, fairways and roughs as needed." Reports that "Rowland aerifies the greens four times a year, pulling cores twice and using solid needle-quad tines in the heavier play winter season for less surface disruption. The tees are aerified once a year and the fairways once a year. The greens and tees are fertilized monthly at approximatley 1lb[pound] per 1,000 square feet, which is the recommended annual rate for greens in the region. The fairways are fertilized four times a year and the roughs twice, also at the same rate." Briefly profiles Rowland, highlighting his involvment in golf "[He has] been playing golf since [he] was 9 years old. In high school [he] worked at the Dublin CC[country club]. The summer before college [he] worked at the Sea Palm course on St. Simmons Island, and [he] continued playing golf in college and my summer work at Dublin CC. Finally, [he] abandoned [his] history major and decided to be an agronomist." Notes that Rowland does competitive Tae Kwon Do and has a 4th degree black belt.
