Abstract/Contents:"Two field studies were conducted in 1987 to determine the efficacy of postemergence applications of triclopyr, 2,4-D and mecoprop combinations of broadleaf weeds in turf. Both studies were conducted in Geneva, New York. Site A was located at Seneca Lake Country Club and site B at Glenwood Cemetery. The predominant weed species at site A were white clover (Trifolium repens L.), narrow leaf plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.), dandelion (Taraxacum officinale Weber in Wiggers) and healall (Prunella vulgaris L.). At site B the predominant weed species were white clover, healall and ground ivy (Glechoma hederacea L.). The weed pressure at site A and B was extremely heavy and moderate, respectively. Each study was set up in a randomized complete block design with four replications of each treatment. Plots were 3 x 15 ft with one foot check (untreated) strips separating every other plot. Treatments were applied with a CO2 backpack sprayer. The spray boom was held 9 inches above the ground and had three 8004 LP TeeJet (Spray Systems Company, Chicago, IL) nozzles spaced 12 inches apart and operated at 15 p.s.i. Wearing protective clothing, the researcher traveled with the sprayer at 2.5 mph to deliver 79.2 gal/A. At sites A and B the treatments were applied on 11 and 17 June, respectively, and the plots rated on 23 and 29 July, respectively. Percent control of each weed species was determined by comparing the plot area to the two nearest check (untreated) strips. Triclopyr at 0.125, 0.250, and 0.375 lb/A was applied in combination with either 0.50 lb/A 2,4-D plus 1.00 lb/A mecoprop or 1.00 lb/A 2,4-D plus 0.50 lb/A mecoprop. These treatments were compared with 0.125, 0.250, and 0.375 lb/A triclopyr, 0.5 and 1.0 lb 2,4-D plus 0.5 lb/A mecoprop, 0.5 lb/A 2,4-D plus 1.0 lb/A mecoprop and 1.0 lb 2,4-D plus dichlorprop plus dicamba (ester) were applied at different rates (Table 1). All above formulations were amines unless noted. The combination of triclopyr (all rates), 0.5 lb/A 2,$-D, and 1.0 lb/A mecoprop provided greater weed control except dandelion than triclopyr (all rates) plus 1.0 lb/A 2,4-D plus 0.5 lb/A mecoprop (Table 1). The addition of triclopyr (all rates) to the mixture of 0.5 lb/A 2,4-D and 1.0 lb/A mecoprop significantly increased the efficacy on clover, ground-ivy and healall. For the mixture of 1.0 lb/A 2,4-D and 0.5 lb/A mecoprop the addition of triclopyr (all rates) significantly increased the efficacy on white clover, narrow leaf plantain, dandelion, and healall. When applied alone all rates of triclopyr provided no control of the above mentioned weeds except some control of white clover. These results suggest that the addition of triclopyr to mixtures of 2,4-D and mecoprop maybe synergistic."
