Abstract/Contents:"All studies were conducted on low maintenance turfgrass areas and herbicides were applied to replicated plots in 467 L ha-1 of water. Common blue violet (Viola papilionacea Pursh) control studies were performed over a three year period, but only 1987 data are shown (Table 1). In 1985, herbicides were applied sequentially (29 May and 19 June), with the second application made at a higher rate. Violet cover data recorded the following spring (29 April 1986), showed that a package mix of 2,4-D + triclopyr (1.2 + 1.9 or 1.7 + 2.6 kg ha-1) had effectively reduced violet cover (3 to 5%) when compared to untreated plots (39% cover). Ester forms of 2,4-D + 2,4-DP; 2,4-D + MCPP + dicamba; and 2,4-D + 2,4-DP + dicamba were ineffective. In 1986, a single application of 2,4-D + triclopyr (1.8 kg ha-1) and two rates of quinclorac (1.1 and 2.2 kg ha-1) applied 25 April had reduced violet cover >90% when plots were evaluated 3 July 1986. Similar results were achieved in 1987 when 2,4-D + triclopyr and quinclorac applied alone or tank mixed with triclopyr or 2,4-D (see Table 1 for date and rates of application). The aforementioned treatments had significantly reduced violet cover; whereas, 2,4-D + MCPP + dicamba and 2,4-D + 2,4-DP were shown again to be ineffective. All herbicide treatments effectively controlled dandelion (Taraxacum officinale Weber) and wild lettuce (Lactuca serriola L.) (Table 1). Chlorflurenol, clopyralid, dicamba, quinclorac and triclopyr were evaluated in numerous combinations and compared to packaged, phenoxy herbicide mixes for control of buckhorn plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.), white clover (Trifolium repens L.) and dandelion in three studies. In one study, all treatments, except 2,4-D alone, had effectively controlled white clover (Table 2). Triclopyr + chlorflurenol (0.14 + 0.14 kg ha-1) had provided poor buckhorn plantain control at two locations (data from one location shown in Ttable 2). Triclopyr + dicamba + chlorflurenol, quinclorac + bentazon, and 2,4-D alone provided fair buckhorn plantain control; whereas, all other treatments shown in Table 2 provided good to excellent control. Hairy crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop.] had begun to germinate in the test area at the time of herbicide application (27 April). All treatments with quinlorac had controlled hairy crabgrass (Table 2). Low hairy crabgrass ratings in untreated plots were attributed to a dense broadleaf weed canopy, which probably reduced crabgrass germination and reduced our ability to obtain accurate ratings. In another study, the triclopyr combinations (as shown in Table 2), except triclopyr + chlorflurenol, had effectively controlled dandelion (data not presented)."
