Abstract/Contents: | "Recent controversy surrounding the future availability of phenoxy herbicides had led to increased research with non-phenoxy alternatives. Several non-phenoxy herbicides are presently available for broadleaf weed control in turf, but these products lack efficacy on certain 2,4-D susceptible weeds. Therefore, one objective of these experiments was to compare non-phenoxy herbicide tank mixes with standard products for the control of common turfgrass weeds. A second objective was to evaluate treatments for the control of creeping speedwell (Veronica filiformis), a particularly difficult-to-control species. Three experiments were conducted; two at Morrisville, N.Y. (designated as experiments A and B) and one in Ithaca, N.Y. (experiment C). Both turfgrass sites were predominantly Kentucky bluegrass. Experiments A and B were infested with common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), broadleaf plantain (Plantago major), and creeping speedwell. Weeds present in Expt. C were dandelion, creeping speedwell, and white clover (Trifolium repens). Herbicides were applied with a CO2 backpack sprayer calibrated to deliver 60 gpa at 40 psi with flat fan nozzles. Treatments varied between experiments but common (or similar) treatments were incorpoarated in each test. A sub-set of the herbicide treatments are presented in Table 1. Non-phenoxy herbicides evaluated included chlorflurenol, triclopyr, clopyralid, dicamba, and BAS 514 OOH. All BAS 514 OOH treatments included on quart per acre of a nonionic surfactant. Dandelion control was adequate with combination treatments of chlorflurenol & BAS 514 OOH, triclopyr & BAS 514 OOH, chlorflurenol & dicamba & triclopyr, 2,4-D & triclopyr, & chlorflurenol & clopyralid & triclopyr. Plantain control was generally less than desirable. One notable exception was triclopyr & BAS 514 OOH. Excellent clover control was obtained by any treatment containing clopyralid, chlorflurenol, BAS 514 OOH, triclopyr, or dicamba. Creeping speedwell was controlled by BAS 514 OOH. Certain other treatments provided some speedwell suppression, but not commercially acceptable control. In a mixed stand of weeds containig creeping speedwell, adequate control was obtained with BAS 514 OOH & triclopyr or BAS 514 OOH & 2,4-D. Other treatments provided less than desirable control of one or more species. Adequate control of dandelion and clover appear to be possible with presently available non-phenoxy herbicides; however, plantain control appears to be inadequate in the abscence of 2,4-D. Further testing is needed to develop alternative plantain control. Specifically, BAS 514 OOH & triclopyr appears to be a promising treatment for broad spectrum weed control in turf." |
