| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses advancements in growing grass on golf course putting greens. States that "bentgrass and Bermudagrass cultivars have shoot densities, pest resistance and other qualities that surpass turf varieties [created prior to 2008]. Older surface benefit from the use of plant growth regulators, improved mowing and cultivation techniques, and fertilizers and pesticide technology." Also discusses turfgrass density, stating that "dense turf, although desirable, can present challenges, most notably the management of surface organic matter...The accumulation of fine particles at the surface can clog larger pores that promote surface drainage. Also, there can be a sealing effect that renders the surface impermeable once fine particles begin to accumulate in the surface." Offers suggestions that may help reduce surface sealing, including vertical mowing and surface grooming. States that "in addition to the consequences of high density and surface organic matter accumulation is the increased use and frequency of rolling. Rolling is a less-stressful option to maintaining green speed compared to mowing." |
