Abstract/Contents:Suggests that "one of the biggest problems in turfgrass management on golf courses is the accumulation of excessive amounts of organic matter (OM) on bentgrass putting greens." Presents a survey conducted to "determine the pattern of OM accumulation in bentgrass putting greens over time." Details the methods and materials used in the study, stating that "soil cores were removed from bentgrass greens on 50 golf courses in North Carolina." Reports that "the highest OM levels accumulate at the soil surface, reflecting intensive shoot and root growth at the soil/atmosphere interface." Concludes that "the pattern of OM accumulation suggests that superintendents need to start their cultivation program in the first year after establishment to control labile OM, and then they must maintain an aggressive program throughout the life of the green to control labile and more recalcitrant OM."
