Abstract/Contents: | Discusses personnel management, highlighting potential challenges working with a multicultural staff. Offers potential considerations to take when "working with any culturally diverse staff, regardless of origin," including "not all cultures and people assimilate into the American workforce in the same way or at the same pace"; "for most, English is their second language. And, learning a second language, particularly as an adult, is not an easy task"; "in reference to Hispanics, remember that 'Hispanic' is not a race, but a culture, and within this culture, [there is] a very diverse group"; and "with any predominant culture in [a] workforce, get to know a little bit about them. The more [an employer understands] their unique beliefs and values, the easier it will be to manage them." Offers suggestions "on the employee process for any organization when hiring and managing a culturally diverse staff." Also suggests hiring "an interpreter, or [asking] a neighbor company with a bilingual HR [human resources] or administrative staff member for assistance." Concludes that "as more managers learn and understand how to best work with these cultural differences, the less transient and more productive their staffs have become. These are some of the ways in which organizations have found effective methods of overcoming challenges in a challenging workforce." |
