Abstract/Contents:Discusses Dr. James Beard's, Ph.D. research on turfgrass overseeding. Reports that "the research at Texas A&M University not only yielded some groundbreaking information, it lead to the development of an entire overseeding system for warm-season grasses." States that "Beard's first major discovery was that with bermudagrass, there is an ideal temperature range within which the turfgrass best accepts renovation and the ryegrass seed will best germinate. Much overseeding failure could be attributed to planting outside that range." States that the range is "between 72 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit...notes that this reading should be taken 4 inches deep in the soil." Informs that "another Beard discovery had to do with the blend of seed used in overseeding. He found that a mix of 80 percent perennial ryegrass seed (by weight) with 20 percent Poa trivialis (rough bluegrass) seed gave excellent results." States "Beard points out that the spring stressing of the perennial ryegrass to avoid the loss of the emerging bermudagrass by excessive shading would apply to much of the southern states, including some of the costal regions such as California and the Carolinas. The one caveat is that this system when used alone doesn't work in states like Arizona that have low humidity."
