Abstract/Contents:"Chlorsulfuron, diclofop, and sulfometuron were evaluated for the selective control of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea, Schreb.) in Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.). Regression analyses showed highly significant negative linear and quadratic response curves for percent tall fescue reduction for each material. Fall and spring treatments with chlorsulfuron and diclofop provided excellent tall fescue control with slight to moderate Kentucky bluegrass phytotoxicity. Kentucky bluegrass recovery was complete within six to eight weeks. Fall and spring applications of sulfometuron resulted in excellent tall fescue control, but initial Kentucky bluegrass damage was severe and recovery required four months. Laboratory studies were conducted to determine the basis for chlorsulfuron selectivity. Slight but significant differences in the foliar absorption and translocation, foliar metabolism, and large differences in root translocation of chlorsulfuron between Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue appeared to account for the selectivity observed in the field."
