Abstract/Contents:"The effects of prodiamine, oxadiazon (Ronstar), and benefin (Balan) on establishment of four cultivars of bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon L.) sprigs (Tifgreen, Sunturf, U-3, common) were evaluated in a study established in summer 1985. Hebicides were applied to 5 by 5 ft. plots (with 1 ft. borders) on 28 May and were incorporated with natural rainfall for 3 weeks. On 20 June, four sprigs of bermudagrass, each containing approximately 4 nodes, were incorporated at 8 spots around the perimeter of each plot. Viability of the 8 groups of sprigs were evaluated 43 DAT; no significant cultivar or herbicide differences were found. Percent ground cover was visually rated at 43, 61, and 100 DAT. Benefin (6 lb. ai/Acre) and prodiamine (2 lb. ai/Acre) were detrimental to intitial stand development, although differences were minimal at season's end. Clipping fresh weights of Tifgreen and Sunturf were less than that of the other cultivars. Root quality was evaluated by randomly removing four terminal stolons per plot and visually rating the root. Root quality ranged from short, blackened, tear-drop shaped roots to long white, healthy roots. No significant cultivar by herbicide interaction occurred. Low rates (1 lb. ai/Acre or less) of prodiamine appeared to be safe for all cultivars tested. Oxadiaszon was generally safe, even at the high rates of 8lb. ai/Acre. Herbicide use during sprigging seems to be a viable means of controlling annual weeds."
