Abstract/Contents:"A major goal of highway rights-of-way vegetation management is to suppress or eliminate unwanted vegetation and reduce the number of mowings needed to maintain the desired vegetation in an attractive manner. With this objective in mind, a field study was conducted along a typical section of Southeastern Louisiana interstate highway right-of-way to determine if pre-emergence herbicide applied with glyphosate, then followed later with additional sequential applications of glyphosate, could effectively eliminate undesirable weed species and reduce seedheads of bahiagrass. Selected pre-emergence herbicides plus glyphosate were initially applied at turf green-up and evaluated four weeks later. Many winter annuals were effectively controlled by all treatments and by glyphosate alone. Vervain (verbena spp.), however, was only controlled with 12 oz./acre glyphosate plus 2 lbs. a.i./acre simazine. Andropogan spp. was not effectively controlled with any treatments, although sequential glyphosate treatments did reduce growth and seedhead formation. The first sequential application of glyphosate (6 oz./acre) was applied nine weeks after the initial treatments and a second sequential application (4 oz./acre) was applied seven weeks later. Slight injury to the bahiagrass was evident following each glyphosate sequential application, but the seedhead suppression and growth reduction benefits out-weighed this temporary injury. Initial treatment plots included glyphosate at 16 oz. and 24 oz.; AC-252,925 at 8 oz.;combinations of 12 oz. glyphosate with AC-252,925 at 2 oz., 4 oz., and 8 oz.; 12 oz. glyphosate plus 2 lbs. a.i./acre simazine; and 12 oz. glyphosate plus 1/4 lb. a.i./acre metribuzin. All treatments were applied to 5' x 50' randomized replicated plots with a CO2 sprayer at 23 gallons solution/acre. Results of this study indicate that glyphosate plus pre-emergence herbicides can reduce or eliminate many weed pest species, and sequential glyphosate treatments will reduce seedheads and the number of mowings of bahiagrass rights-of-way."
