Abstract/Contents:Discusses sports turf management around the world. Suggests that "the areas of sports turf that are most (intensively) used are football pitches...[not] major Stadiums...[but] general sports facilities at school and local government levels." Mentions the bump-in-and-out and roll-in-roll-out turf installation systems. Explains that "the bump in bump out systems...succeed only if done frequently and with great precision. The cost of bump-in-bump-out systems is astronomically high." Also mentions stadium design in China, suggesting that "the Stadium designers make all the usual mistakes": "no light orientation"; "shade"; "no air flow"; "no grass consideration at all"; and "a desire to heat the whole Stadium." Suggests that "the biggest problem for the operators is not the grass but making the whole venue pay." Highlighihts genetic modification, stating that "it is increasingly popular with plant breeders but has struck trouble with pollen dispersal patterns that pose weed threat problems. [Bentgrasses] in particular have been the focus of attention here and significant resistance as well as herbicide resistance has been developed." Discusses turfgrass programs in China, stating that "there is a serious turf programme [program] in Nanjing at the Academy of Plant Science in the National Botanic Gardens."
