Abstract/Contents:Discusses employee performance assessment, stating that "the performance of individuals in organisations [organizations] has traditionally been seen as measured through performance appraisal and rewarded though the remuneration process." Discusses planning performance, supporting performance, and reviewing performance as "three key aspects of effective performance which can be used as steps in managing employee performance." Also discusses performance, potential, and reward appraisal, stating that "one of the key criteria for successful appraisal is honesty and openness by both parties. Reward appraisal tend [tends] to push employees into being less honest and open if not downright dishonest, in order to increase their chance of receiving a higher level of reward." Mentions potential problems with appraisal, stating that "appraisals should appraise the job and how the individual peforms the job rather than whom the individual is." Concludes that "the effectiveness of appraisal systems is determined by their appropriateness for the jobs covered, the managers involved and the organisations themselves. However it is important to remember that appraisal systems all have a shelf life...systems wear out over time and don't achieve as useful outcomes in the third, fifth or tenth year of operation as they did in the first and second year of operation. Also...organisations change all the time. An appraisal system that was ideal three years ago for the organisation will almost certainly not be ideal or even maybe very much use to the organisation" in later years.
