Abstract/Contents:Describes the development of "a national golf course bench marking system, based around sound and objective methods for measuring golf course performance" started in 2003. States that "course quality assessment and bench marking involves": "identifying the key factors that determine course playability/quality and developing methods for objectively and accurately measuring these key properties"; "collecting data using the methodology in conjunction with player surveys to determine correlations between measured and assessed course quality and to derive standards"; and "using the data collected to bench mark changes at a course over time or to relate performance of the course to other sources." Details the procedure used to develop a course bench marking system, including "identify key properties that determine the quality/playability of a golf course. These properties would embrace all components of the course - greens, bunker, tees, [and] fairways"; "develop tests/methods for objectively measuring/determining course quality. Methods used must be meaningful, reproducible and affordable"; "trial tests and collect data in order to establish a correlation between the test result and player assessment. This step will require a player survey to be carried out in conjunction with the testing. The survey will also help establish standards of acceptance"; and "collect data (plus other relevant information) from a range of courses over time to establish a national data base." Discusses properties that may be able to be measured using this system and also mentions potential uses of a course quality assessment system. Concludes that "the idea of introducing a course quality assessment system is undoubtedly going to raise debate among golf clubs"; "feedback suggests that most clubs see a course quality assessment system in a positive way, offering a more professional and objective means of recording course performance and for making fundamental decisions on the course"; and "for the concept to be developed it needs the support from both club administrators and superintendents."
