Abstract/Contents:Discusses possible techniques for maintaining cricket pitches, highlighting two theories used in Australia. Suggests that "the wicket can be prepared very dry and perfect to bat on from day one...[or] the wicket can be left with more moisture in the surface where the ball seams and swings for five or six sessions, batting is hard work resulting in small first innings totals." Explains that "both these scenarios are largely dependent on conditions and the nature of the clay involved." Emphasizes that "the importance of a healthy root system should not be forgotten. It is the drying and reinforcement element of all good wickets. It is no surprise that the strips in Australia which have the best pace and bounce, also have the best growing conditions for couch, and therefore excellent, deep, healthy root systems. These root systems remove sub surface moisture far more quickly than the sun and/or endless hours on a roller."
