Abstract/Contents:Discusses possible methods for managing contaminaton of sand carpet layers, highlighting surface removal and scarification. Suggests that "where contamination of the top 20mm [millimeters] is discovered, the sand profile underneath is clean and the surface still performs to end user expectations, scarifying operations can reverse the sand carpet degradation. Scarifying and sand topdressing programmes [programs] are very useful when this programme is implemented from the start. Where the top 30mm or more is completely contaminated and/or the sportsfield surface becomes unusable during winter...removal is a more appropriate management option." Describes surface removal, highlighting the use of the Koro Fieldmaker. Suggests that it "is a very cost effective method of removing contaminated sand profiles from sportsfields." Explains that "surface removal of up to 40mm per pass is possible with the Koro Fieldmaker. This machine can remove a sportsfield surface within 8-12 hours, depending on the depth of operation." States that "the type of turfgrass surface plays a significant role in sand carpet management." Concludes that "sports field managers need to focus budgets and management programmes equally on organic matter control and the type of turfgrass surface grown."
