Abstract/Contents:Discusses the use of couch grass (Indian doab) hybrids (Cynodon dactylon x Cynodon transvaalensis) for bowling surfaces in New Zealand. Presents two case studies held at Houhora Bowling Club and Avondale Bowling Club. Mentions potential disadvantages of "growing couch in a subtropical environment that greenkeepers need to be aware of," including "green speed in New Zealand climate is likely to be below 16 seconds (in most conditions)"; "high potential for disease pressure due to sub optimal climatic conditions"; "relatively short summer growing season for repair and recovery"; "couch prefers sandy soil whereas most NZ [New Zealand] greens are loams or clays"; and "specialist machinery is required for dethatching/coring." Concludes that "the subtropical climate in the Auckland and Northland regions is not ideally suited to couch. This factor combined with the playing characteristics of couch when compared to cotula/starweed will limit the role that couch is to play in the New Zealand bowling green industry."
