Abstract/Contents:Profiles Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney, Australia, highlighting the history of the course and a reconstruction project. States that "racing first comenced at Randwick in 1842 and, due to the state of the track, racing ceased at the site until 1860 when the AJC [Australian Jockey Club] decided to spend some money on the track to make it a viable racing surface." Explains that "it was decided to reconstruct the inside of the track first and then it would be a reinforced profile. In 1998 record rainfall was received in Sydney and, as a result, 6 race meetings were lost at Randwick due to surface water on the track...during the tunnel construction the Course Proper was closed from May to September 2000 resulting in the track having the entire winter and early spring without a horse on it." Details the renovation process, stating that "the construction drawings were sent out for tender in February 2001 in preparation for work to start on May 10th 2001...The final piece of turf was laid in early December and trials were conducted on the track in mid-January." Mentions that "a couple of problem areas have come to the fore during racing. A section of the 400m [meter] tends to break up more than other parts of the circuit. The turf laid on this area was not the best quality...The other problem area is where the 1000m chute meets the circuit. This was the last section completed." Concludes that "the consistent cambers, improved geometry, uniform profile and full drainage system as placed the Randwick track in a terrific position for the future of racing in Sydney. Despite the couple of problem areas the track is performing well and with diligent management the future of this surface at Royal Randwick is very bright."
