Abstract/Contents:Discusses the use of warm-season turfgrasses in New Zealand, profiling kikuyu grass and Indian doub (couch grass). Profiles kikuyu, stating that "kikuyu is a very aggressive grass during its growing season, and has a high fertility demand. It is favoured in warm areas if there are cool nights...As with any grass planting, Kikuyu should be given a pre emergence herbicide...to assist establishment." Also profiles Indian doub, stating that "there are many varieties of Doub in the market place world wide and they all have different characteristics...[and] in general doub is a high input grass. Doub simply will not perform well if it has competition from any other plant. It has high light requirements and high nutritional demands to perform." Discusses wear tolerance and weed control in kikuyu and Doub. Concludes that "one of the important things to understand about both Kikuyu and Doub is that if [they are left] to themselves, and don't try to renovate them during the summer, then they age and cold will turn them off. Removing thatch keeps the sward young and vigorous."
