Abstract/Contents:Defines "sustainable golf" as, "optimising [optimizing] the playing quality of the golf course in harmony with the conservation of its natural environment under economically sound and socially responsible management." Explains that "sustainability can only be achieved through the implementation of best practice and is only as flexible as the single limiting factor in its definition which applies to any specific site which, more often than not, will be environmental or economic considerations." Highlights potential areas of best practice for course maintenance, including "to ensure that the [chemical] product is used in a sustainable manner in line with the recommendations of the manufacturer"; and that "the input of fertiliser [fertilizer] should not be determined by the quantity of clippings removed, it should be based on the opposite premise, [for example] to minimise [minimize] clippings whilst retaining desired playing surface requirements." Profiles organic fertilizer, stating that "as a 'grow in' product the organic fertiliser promotes a more rapid rate of turf and vegetative establishment; this quick ground cover minimises soil erosion, the need for repairs and re-seeding as well as time required to first use the turf."
